Mike Plant has been in the business long enough to remember when cut-and-paste involved actual cutting and pasting. Having been alive in 1964, he does not believe in the curse on Cleveland’s sports teams, although Game 7 of the 1997 World Series made him waver a little. A graduate of Wooster High, Northwood University and Kent State, Plant has two sons making their way out in the world, neither of whom ever ask him for money. And, although he tries to avoid cliches when writing, he does, indeed, have an ex who lives in Texas. Plant lives in Wooster, and can be reached at 330-287-1649 or mplant@the-daily-record. He gladly welcomes all story ideas.

All the positive vibes built by the Browns during their 3-game winning streak were just erased in a little more than three hours — or how long it took the Washington Redskins to put a 38-21 whipping on them in the home finale in Cleveland. Turns out the Redskins didn’t need RG3 Sunday — fellow […]

Browns’ loss was bad, but still …

You know how terrible the Browns’ offense is when you’re waiting on Josh Cribbs punt and kickoff returns as the best opportunities for a touchdown. Despite giving up a 91-yard game-winning drive in the fourth quarter to lose to Philadelphia, the Browns’ defense was good enough. It can’t be expected to play 40 minutes, though, […]

Only one way for Browns to go

This season, The Associated Press has come up with ‘AP32,’ weekly rankings of all the teams in the NFL. The Cleveland Browns are ranked, not surprisingly, at the bottom heading into Sunday’s opener against visiting Philadelphia. The Browns have not given their loyal home fans much to cheer for since 1999, other than the 2007 […]

Our version of “The Decision”

One of the hardest decisions we have all year is what theme to center our annual HS football preview around. That’s been made, obviously, as it comes in Thursday’s paper, the day before the season opens. But one even more important is near for the staff, although this one is normally made by myself and […]

USFL coming to Akron?

Got an email this morning (Tuesday, 6/26), which included this, from PR man Greg Ball: “As you may have heard, executives from the United States Football League (USFL) will be visiting Akron this week (Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning) to meet with local officials about the possibility of placing a USFL team there. Jaime Cuadra […]

Football weather tonight at WHS

Optimism is on the rise with Wooster High football, which I guess usually is the case when a new head coach comes in, as Doug Haas has done at WHS. Stopped up to watch the first of his 10 summer practices Monday night at Follis Field, where, once the sun went away, it felt like […]

Knights have all of the pieces

After returning from the 60-day disabled list, I was only able to cover a few h.s. baseball games this season. Add in that we have Kevin Lynch covering Holmes County and it was a rare opportunity for me to see West Holmes in a regional semifinal. I couldn’t have been more impressed. The Knights completely […]

Like many others in Northeast Ohio, I can’t get enough of the Browns, even though they’re an NFL laughingstock right now. As next week’s draft stands now, GM Tom Heckert has three of the first 37 picks. While I’d like to see him stand pat at No. 4 and grab Alabama RB Trent Richardson, I’ve […]

second thoughts on the Tribe

In Tuesday’s DR, my preseason outlook at the Indians wasn’t real positive. But, before the first pitch of the 2012 season has been thrown, I think I need to add a little bit of hope to what’s going to happen this season on the corner of Carnegie and Ontario. Why am I backtracking so soon? […]

Grossi a Twitter casualty …

| January 28, 2012 | 0 Comments

… or, how to lose your beat in 140 characters or less. Longtime Browns beat writer Tony Grossi, in case you missed it, has been reassigned by the Cleveland Plain Dealer after a recent tweet he made on Browns owner Randy Lerner, calling him “pathetic” and “irrelevant.” PD editors chose to pull Grossi from covering […]
