USFL coming to Akron?
Got an email this morning (Tuesday, 6/26), which included this, from PR man Greg Ball:
“As you may have heard, executives from the United States Football League (USFL) will be visiting Akron this week (Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning) to meet with local officials about the possibility of placing a USFL team there.
Jaime Cuadra (the USFL’s President and CEO) and Fred Biletnikoff, Jr. (the USFL’s VP of Football Operations and Chief Operating Officer) will meet with Mayor Plusquellic and representatives from the Rubber Bowl and InfoCision Stadium, as well as with prospective ownership groups.”
It went on to add that the league plans to debut in March of next year, with eight teams playing a 14-game schedule. The last line said: “As a spring football league, the USFL is not attempting to compete with the NFL.”
For those of you old enough to remember the first USFL, two things were its doom. Or, one decision that came from one man: When the league, led by Donald Trump, tried to compete in the fall.
The league quickly folded. Alas, Donald Trump still haunts us. And no, I’m not jealous of his hair.
Good luck to Akron … just keep everyone away from the Rubber Bowl and go straight to Infocision and you’ve got a shot.
