early WCAL football preview

| July 12, 2011 | 0 Comments

Although July is traditionally the month during which sports writers — particularly those covering mostly high school sports and those getting up their in age (and I fit both categories) — we’ve been kicking around ideas for the DR football preview.

While I’m not quite ready to dive into that work — I’m in summer mode, not fall — it’s never too early to think about who’s going to be the Kings of Friday night this season.

The Wayne County Athletic League, over the past decade or so, has evolved from the Holy Trinity of Haves — Dalton, Smithville and Waynedale — to where only one program, Chippewa, could be labeled a ‘Have-Not.’ Rittman may take a step back from the respectability it earned in 2010, but aside from the two schools who duel it out annually for the Big Chief trophy, I see the other six trading upper division finishes between them for the foreseeable future. Makes for great drama on a weekly basis, resulting in a true champ (or champs) for the last team standing.

I’m going to give an early opinion on the WCAL race here soon, but as a sneak preview, I’d say we might have a repeat of 2010, with the Norwayne-Hillsdale game deciding the champ. But the boys in green may have a say in it as well.

Mike Plant

About Mike Plant: Mike Plant has been in the business long enough to remember when cut-and-paste involved actual cutting and pasting. Having been alive in 1964, he does not believe in the curse on Cleveland’s sports teams, although Game 7 of the 1997 World Series made him waver a little. A graduate of Wooster High, Northwood University and Kent State, Plant has two sons making their way out in the world, neither of whom ever ask him for money. And, although he tries to avoid cliches when writing, he does, indeed, have an ex who lives in Texas. Plant lives in Wooster, and can be reached at 330-287-1649 or mplant@the-daily-record. He gladly welcomes all story ideas. View author profile.
