Regionals and DR All-Star games
The high school baseball and softball seasons are quickly coming to an end, but there are some big contests left to be played.
REGIONAL BASEBALL, SOFTBALL
In softball, Loudonville will play Norwayne in a Div. III Massillon Regional Semifinal at Massillon Community Park at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
In baseball, Rittman takes on New Washington Buckeye Central in a Div. IV Lorain Regional Semifinal at Pipe Yard Stadium at 5 p.m. Thursday. The Bucks have a right-handed pitcher in Sam Shafer who’s headed to Ohio State and has 104 strikeouts on the spring.
DAILY RECORD ALL-STAR GAMES
BASEBALL
The area’s top seniors will play in Daily Record Baseball and Softball All-Star games.
The fifth annual Daily Record Baseball All-Star Game for area high school seniors will be played at The College of Wooster’s Art Murray Field Friday. The nine-inning game will start at 5 p.m.
The top seniors from the combined 24-school coverage area of the Daily Record and Times-Gazette will play in the game.
Selected to coach the East squad will be Hiland’s Tom Gibson and Rittman’s Joe Staley.
The East’s All-Stars are Central Christian’s Jordan Gray (P-1B-3B), Chippewa’s Justin Taylor (DH); Dalton’s Jake Zeek (P-INF); Hiland’s Hayden Mobley (C-P), Brad Schlabach (P-OF) and Nicky Yoder (SS); Kingsway’s Patrick Barrios (P-CF); Norwayne’s Cody Hartong (1B-P), Orrville’s Travis Infield (P-C); Rittman’s Brandon Bauman (SS-2B-P) and Cory Williams (C-INF); Smithville’s Frank Duffy (P-1B); Waynedale’s Tyler Harter (2B-OF); and Wooster’s Mike Eisel (IF-P) and Zach Ellsworth (OF). Tuslaw was not able to participate because its graduation is on the day of the game.
The West team will be directed by Ashland’s Rob Lavengood and Triway’s Sean Carmichael.
Making up the West roster are Ashland’s Nick Tyner (DH) and Brandon Nalley (C-OF); Black River’s Jon Sas (C); Cloverleaf’s Cory Woodhall (2B-P); Crestview’s Connor Plemens (C-OF); Hillsdale’s Zach Fulk (2B); Loudonville’s Doug Schalmo (C-P-OF) and Brandon Hawk (P-OF); Northwestern’s Casey Neer (OF) and Logan Hershey (P-OF); Mapleton’s David Sanders (OF); South Central’s Nick Kirk (OF) and Von Buhrman (C); Triway’s Sawyer Polen (SS-P), Derek Carmichael (2B-P) and Nolan Wharton (P-OF).
Neither New London nor West Holmes’ nominated a player.
SOFTBALL
The first Daily Record All-Star Softball Game, scheduled for this Thursday at The College of Wooster, has been moved to next Tuesday, May 31, at the same field.
Two teams with multiple players selected — Loudonville from the West team and Norwayne from the East — square off Wednesday in a Div. III Massillon Regional game. The following night, the Bobcats are scheduled to play Hillsdale in a contest that will decide the Wayne County Athletic League championship.
The May 31 game, featuring the best senior softball players from teams in the coverage area of The Daily Record and Ashland Times-Gazette, will begin festivities at 5 p.m., with first pitch at 5:15. Admission is free.
